Do you know that you can improve the performance of your Windows 7 PC by changing its theme? This article will explain you how the performance will improve.

Let’s start with the definition of theme. A theme is a collection of audio, images and colors on your computer. The desktop background, screen saver, sound scheme are all included in the themes. There are some themes which also include the mouse pointer and desktop icons.

Themes are used for giving a better look to Windows 7 PC. By default, Windows 7 includes some basic themes for your computer. You can also download them from various websites. There are some websites which provides them at no cost. Here is a list of some websites which provides the themes for free.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/personalize
http://www.wheresmydrink.com/2009/10/free-themes-for-windows-7-32-bit-64-bit/

In Windows 7, you can choose from a list of available themes like Aero theme, Windows 7 Basic theme, and high-contrast theme. If you like any theme then just click on it to apply it as your theme. Windows 7 also allows you to create a customized theme. Now you can even change the individual components of a theme and save it for your use and can share it with your friends too.

The themes are allocated a particular amount of computer memory. If they occupy the complete or most of the allocated memory, then, you might see a message which will inform you that your current theme is utilizing most of its allowed memory. It might slow down your Windows 7 computer performance. So, you can choose the basic theme or the high-contrast theme to improve its performance. Suppose you choose the Windows 7 basic then you may have to compromise with the premium visual experience offered by Aero feature.

Follow the procedure to change the Windows 7 theme:

STEP 1 : Click on Start button.

STEP 2 : Then, click on the Control Panel. A search box will open.

STEP 3 : Type personalization in the search box. This step will open the Personalization option.

STEP 4 : If you want to choose Windows 7 Basic theme or the High Contrast Themes, then click on these themes under the Basic and High contrast Themes.

Sometimes, the gadgets that have been added by you to the desktop require customization. You might want to resize them, move them or do other desired changes. For example, the clock gadget in windows 7 can be customized by you by selecting a new clock design and a time zone other than your own. You also need to modify the Feed Headline gadget so that it can exhibit the news headline for a specific RSS feed which is subscribed by you.

To modify the content of a gadget, place the mouse pointer in the upper right corner of the gadget and then click the icon that appears beneath the X. There is also another way to customize the content, you can right-click the icon and then choose options from the shortcut menu. Dialog box specific to the gadget would open up that allows you to customize its display.

Changing the opacity of a gadget

In order to customize the information that appears in a gadget, the opacity of a gadget can be modified by you. Any gadget that has been added by you to Windows 7 desktop is automatically exhibited at 100 percent opacity. However, if you want to make it lighten so that you can see through, it can be done by changing the gadget opacity. To customize the opacity of a gadget, right-click the gadget and then highlight the opacity item on its shortcut menu. Submenu would be displayed by windows where you can select the new opacity percentage items you want to use.

The taskbar is basically a link to all the current information about what all is happening on your Windows 7 PC. This improvement has been made to make the appearance of taskbar content more clear. However, the icons in between the start button and the clock date have undergone certain changes.

The area on right end of the taskbar displays some information about the status of programs, which includes the information about the programs which are executing in the background, along with the links to few system commands is the Notification area. The notification area shows the background running programs which do not interact with the user. But instead can be seen here. The notification area has been changed a lot in the latest Windows 7 release. There are a few system icons and notification icons which are hidden by default. Also, the other programs which you don’t want to audit can be made as hidden.

There is a button named Show desktop, which appears at the extreme right end of the taskbar. If you have worked on the previous versions of the Windows operating system then you can easily monitor that the appearance of the button have been changed considerably. When you click on the Show Desktop button, it will minimize all the currently active windows. This facilitates the user in accessing the desktop icons and shortcuts. When you point to the button, it will make all the active windows transparent such that the user can see the desktop.

Many have experienced scenarios where a program or Windows itself, stops responding at the same moment. This is type of a performance problem that can be affected considerably by the performance of graphics in the system. We classify these as desktop responsiveness issues. Enhancing responsiveness, both in real terms and by neglecting non-responsive moments, is one of the ways that to improve performance in the system. It is also difficult to measure.

Measuring desktop responsiveness is a difficult issue since a number of issues which influence responsiveness cannot be easily reproducible and there is a huge variety of them. They are infrequently caught by either kind of benchmark as these problems are completely dependent on real-world combinations of aspects. For Windows 7, a great deal was spent in looking at these performance glitches using a mechanism in test versions of Windows 7 which has the capacity to record key Operating System events and when they occurred. By real-world testing when we encounter a responsiveness issue, the tester can hit a record key and enter a small narration of the problem encountered. The event chronicle with diagnostic information called a “performance trace” is written out to a file and uploaded to the server where a team of performance analysts parse the data to figure out the reason of the responsiveness problem. This process has been prosperous to the extent that today most responsiveness problems can be immediately tracked down and root-caused.

Using this method, we found so many of desktop responsiveness traces where the tester experienced a frozen desktop anywhere from 100m seconds to a few seconds. The type of problems ranged from an antivirus blocking disk access for all programs during updating itself on the vendor’s website to a program doing network access from a UI thread. In an important portion of these traces, we have found that a GDI program is waiting on another GDI program which is experiencing slowdowns due to exceeding paging activities. This was the only and single-most usually occurring cause of all desktop responsiveness problem, which without this data we might would not have assumed.

Based on these probes, Microsoft worked to enhance the architecture in these two key areas:

Windows 7 GDI Concurrency: Enhance responsiveness when multiple programs are running. This expected a re-architecture of the code around GDI (Graphics Device Interface) synchronization objects or “locks”.

Reduction of overall memory footprint of Windows 7: Decrease the memory overhead of composition in the Desktop Window Manager (DWM) is the component liable for rendering the desktop. This helps decrease overall paging activity and thus is especially valuable for low-memory PCs, especially using shared graphics memory.

Windows 7, Microsoft’s latest operating system, allows you to access Jump List feature from your keyboard. Jump Lists – which appear on the Start menu as well as on the taskbar when a user right-clicks on an icon – are like little application-specific Start menus. They can also be found on the icons of applications specifically pinned to the taskbar or the Start menu.

Just like you can use Win+1, Win+2, etc to cycle between open windows on the taskbar, there is a built-in Windows 7 shortcut key that opens up the Jump Lists for the first 9 taskbar icons. This means that for the icon in the taskbar, you can use shortcut key Win+Alt+1 to open the Jump List.

Jump List menu for Microsoft Outlook

You can open the Jump List menu for Microsoft Outlook using Win+Alt+4, since it is at the 4th position on the taskbar. You can use Win+Alt+1 to open up the Jump List for Windows Explorer. It is an excellent way to access recently used items more easily and more quickly and one of the best features in Windows 7. Use Windows+ Alt+ (1-9) to quickly launch the Jump List of a program. You can use this shortcut along with other taskbar shortcuts such as Windows + T to enhance your productivity easily.

The feature can by default contain the application’s shortcut, the ability to toggle pinning, the ability to close one or all windows, access to specific tasks related with the application, and once you start using the application, a list of recent documents or destinations depending on the application.

Sometimes users need to work on several Windows simultaneously, and require to clean the taskbar. In Windows 7 taskbar, you can pin any running program to the taskbar for easy access, but it treats folders like second-class sub-items of the Explorer icon. To pin individual folder shortcuts to your taskbar, you can create a fake application.

If you are trying to pin a specific folder to your taskbar, then it may result in being pinned instead to the Windows Explorer folder icon as an item you can access from a right-click. The jump lists can be helpful and productive, but that is just not as easy as just popping open your pictures.

To get around Windows 7 shortcut shield, by creating a dummy text file and giving it a recognizable icon, you can create a new pseudo-application linked to your destination. It is like the old Windows Explorer and desktop hack on which Windows users have been relying for years.

For quick launching, Windows 7 by default pins any program to the taskbar, but it gets more difficult if you want to pin something that isn’t an application.

In order to make almost any item pinnable to the taskbar, there is only one simple rule that you have to follow:

Create a shortcut of that item and save it somewhere so that you can find it easily.

Now create a shortcut to that shortcut and add the ‘explorer’ word before its path.

Then you have a shortcut which you can pin to the taskbar.

Note: The addition of the word “explorer” described above is basically making the shortcut into an application shortcut.

You can open Explorer by hitting Win+R and typing explorer, so that seems to be how this method makes pinning possible. You enjoy your pinned item free-for-all by hitting up the full post for a very detailed rundown.

Although the evolutionary taskbar started with Windows 1.0, there has been significant improvement in its architectural design since then, which has helped in enhancing the user productivity.

Besides being simplified, the taskbar of Windows 7 saves time and screen space. It organizes running applications in a systematic way and helps enable faster switching of windows. In a nutshell, the taskbar of Windows 7 has been greatly improved in every aspect and gives users a better experience. If you are still not impressed by the new taskbar, you have the freedom to switch back to the previous one.

Get a plethora of features in Windows 7 that is being offered by Microsoft’s latest operating system.

Problem:

Prospective users are still struggling with assessing the key features of Windows 7, even as the launch of the operating system comes nearer.

Solution:

The new taskbar which uses large icons instead of taskbar buttons, is the first thing that you can’t miss noticing. Hovering cursor over icons in the taskbar gives a preview of Windows opened under that application; and hovering over the small preview gives you the full screen preview of that Window. Windows opened under same application are automatically combined into a single taskbar button.

Secondly, the simple, clean, and uncluttered desktop of Windows 7 is really impressive.

Some of the other features that users will find engaging follow:

Pre-loaded Internet Explorer 8

Improved Taskbar

Absolutely New Calculator

Enhanced Security

New versions of MsPaint and Wordpad with the Ribbon interface

Transformed Windows Backup

Integrated XPS Viewer

New HomeGroups for sharing files and folders across the network

New, easier wireless connections tray icon

Updated Media Center with new features

Lesser time for boot-up and installation

Windows 7 has been very attractively priced for students. Some say that it is a measure to give competition to Apple’s Snow leopard which has a strong market share in the education sector. No matter what is the reason behind the price cut, it is surely a good opportunity for the students to buy the operating system at such a low price.

Team of experts at iYogi can help you with anything related to the new operating system.

Enjoy better appearance of PC’s desktop with Windows 7 by creating some fabulous wallpapers by ensembling bright colors and images.

Problem:

It is uninteresting to work with a PC with a dull desktop.

Solution:

The duly popularised Windows 7 is about to make its entry under the shades of some very attractive new wallpapers making it extremely difficult to decided the superiority of one over other.

You can select wallpapers by using Right-click on an empty part of the desktop, select Personalise > Desktop Background, then hold down Ctrl as you click on the images you like.

You can also set the frequency of time on which you’d like the images to be changed. You can select shuffle if you’d like the backgrounds to appear in a random order, then click “Save Changes” and enjoy the show.

However, this is not the end of show orchestrated by Windows 7, if a slideshow based on your standard wallpaper isn’t enough, then you can always create a theme that extracts images from an RSS feed. Such themes always displays the latest BBC news and weather on your desktop.

Windows 7 Taskbar

Furthermore, the new Windows 7 Taskbar has also been designed as one big quick launch toolbar that can hold any program shortcuts you like. And that’s fine, except it does consume a little more screen real estate than we’d like. You can also shrink it to a more manageable size by right-clicking the Start orb, then Properties > Taskbar > Use small icons > OK.

The OS gives little more flexibility to you because in case you’re unhappy with the new Taskbar, even after shrinking it, then you can restore the old Quick Launch Toolbar.

If you like and want clean interface, then Windows 7 new option System Tray can help you. On the right side of the taskbar is system notification area. This block of screen comes pre-installed on PC. Programs like clock, volume control, anti-virus and program agents like Yahoo! Messenger are always present on System Tray. There is no easy way to manage icons in it. Whether you want them or not, they cannot be uninstalled.

Windows 7 provides you with the solution to it. It provides the user with the control over the icons. The behavior of each of the icon can be customized in Windows 7. The new system tray is far better than the older one as it allows the user to has control over the icons to show or hide them. And if you want to see notifications, you can select the option to show system notifications.

By default, only three icons are displayed in the notification area in Windows 7. You have to click the caret to see the rest of the notifications and can drag the ones you want to see in the notification area. This is not the biggest change that occurs, the remarkable change occur in the option to customize the notification area. Use handy menu and select yourself which icon you wish to see always, and the icons you never wish to see and the icons you wish to see when there is a notification. Other minor tweaks have also been added – to the clock, the WiFi icon etc. Many system-level notifications such as firewall settings and application updates are now included in “Action Center icon”. Some balloon notifications will appear with little icons on them that facilitate the user whether the user want to see that balloon or not.

The radical change the operating system has undergone is in user interface. Enhanced user experience is the focus of windows 7. The most visible result is on the taskbar. By default the new tray icons are hidden and invisible. The icons have also been modernized to make the tasks easier.

Microsoft has integrated several welcome features in Windows 7, including an improved user interface. One of the innovative changes that you would immediately notice is the new and improved taskbar. It has been dramatically changed. All the clutter has been stripped off. Taller taskbar, squared icons and some other features have resulted in a tidy visual experience.

Let us discuss in this article what all changes Microsoft has made in order to enhance the users’ experience. The first noticeable change in the taskbar of Windows 7 is that of size. It is bigger in comparison to that of Windows Vista or Windows XP.

Earlier, when you opened a program in Windows Vista, a window was shown in the taskbar as a small rectangular bar, but in Windows 7 you will find just the big icon. All text is gone. Furthermore, you can pin the programs that you regularly use, so that they hang there at the bottom even when they are not in use.

Moreover, there is no quick launch any more. In Windows 7, you can drag any of the programs to the taskbar. You also get the freedom to rearrange the icons on the taskbar just by clicking and dragging. User experience has been further made interesting by adding some extra features. When you move over your cursor on the icons, you will see thumbnails of every file that is open in that program, and if you move the cursor over the thumbnail, you will be able to see a full-screen preview of that window.

A new shortcut to go to desktop has been introduced on right side of the desktop, next to date and time. It is always there and is easy to locate.

There is no need to open the Action Center through control panel any more. A new flag icon located on the left of the battery icon opens the Action Center in the Windows 7 taskbar. The Action Center provides you with notifications, updates, etc.

Microsoft addresses the problems faced by IT professionals and deployment specialists in maintaining multilingual images with the Multilanguage Image feature in its latest operating system, Windows 7.

The tool enables IT professionals to create and deploy multilingual versions of Windows 7 using Windows Automated Installation Kit or OEM Preinstallation Kit tools. This will help create multilingual images that reduces the number of images that user needs to maintain. The images can be put into action from a server, media or from network share.

The language packs and other update packages can be added to an offline Windows image. Then you can boot the image in audit mode and add applications and drivers, which will help you to recapture the image. Test the captured image. Once it is tested, by removing unnecessary language resources, create regional images. You can use these regional languages for deployment.

Further improvements have also been made in the tool for the smooth creation and deployment of the multilingual Windows images. Earlier, the number of language packs that could be added were limited but now in Windows 7, the language pack performance and size have been improved.

You can also remove the language packs from an image without booting the image with Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool. Windows 7 Language packs contain the resources related to particular language. There are two multilingual deployment resources – deploying the image that contain multiple languages, but you can activate only one language as a default, and deploying a multilingual image which allows you to switch between languages.

Earlier, package manager, the international settings configuration tool and the PEimg tool were included in Windows Vista but now these functions have been replaced by Deployment Image Servicing and Management, as this tool consolidates the function of replaced tools. The internal structure of service packs have also been improved. Now you don’t require to install separate prerequisite packages. All these packages are compiled with the service packs. Logging has also been enhanced. Now, it is far more easier to understand the messages, events, and errors that are logged.

Jump Lists – which appear on the Start menu as well as on the Taskbar when a user right-clicks on an icon – are like little application-specific Start menus. They can also be found on the icons of applications specifically pinned to the Taskbar or the Start menu.

The appearance of Jump Lists on the Start menu is a little different than those on the Taskbar, although they provide the same functionality.

The feature can by default contain the application’s shortcut, the ability to toggle pinning, the ability to close one or all windows, access to specific tasks related with the application, and once you start using the application, a list of recent documents or destinations depending on the application.

Windows 7 does not have a Quick Launch bar, with the Taskbar itself serving as a platform to both launch applications as well as access running tasks. Internet Explorer is by default pinned to the Taskbar and has a Jump List.

The Jump List pops up when you right-click on the Internet Explorer icon. It displays two sections, which are termed the Tasks section and the Destinations section. The later includes the History category, while the Tasks section has the Taskbar tasks, which enables a user to launch Internet Explorer and remove the application icon from the Taskbar.

A Close Window task is added to the Tasks section, when you launch the Internet Explorer.
The items displayed in the History category are cycled out of the list as new items are added. You can pin a specific item from the History category on the Jump List, if you want to do so.

Jump List allows you to frequently access the menus – whether you want to access the recent items used or about the new tasks list.

Problem:

Earlier, users faced difficulty in jumping to things whether its about getting to the destination or accessing the command of the program.

Solution:

Two manifestations are included in the new Jump List - as part of the traditional Start Menu, and as a popup menu from the application’s taskbar button.

You can take the tool as a mini start menu for each and every program. Destination and task of the program is generally used by this new feature.

Jump List Advantages

Jump List offers several advantages such as to launch a file or access a task you don’t require to start a program and additionally it doesn’t occupy much space on the taskbar and is automatically organized. The user can have access to many destinations without the need to customize to the UI. The Jump List can show the lot of text for each of its items.

You can simply pin to the list, just by keeping the require destination around. By default, the menu contains the program’s shortcut, the ability to toggle pinning and the ability to close Windows. The programs could easily replace the default MRU (Most Recently Used) list with a system-maintained MFU (Most Frequently Used) list. Custom destination list can also be easily provided by the programs. It has many customizable parts that are different across different applications.

Get key features at your hand with new Taskbar in Windows 7 as it also displays the icons which are not currently running.

Problem:

Sometimes users need to work on many Windows simultaneously and require to clean the Taskbar.

Solution:

Although the evolutionary taskbar started with Windows 1.0, there has been significant improvement in its architectural design since then, which has helped in enhancing the user productivity.

Windows 7 has made it easier for the user to get to the programs and destinations with less clicks and mouse movement. Sometimes we need to keep a lot of programs on the Quick Launch to make top level room for the pinned items.

And to make space for the other programs, we require deleting the other valuable programs. While researching, the user follows three basic steps which he need to repeat again and again. The user can get to work only after using the program UI. Therefore, for the user comfort Windows 7 provides the feature to jump directly to these features by skipping the unnecessary steps. Directly reaching the destination is now quite easier and accessible from the taskbar. To switch between the Windows is one of the basic features of the taskbar which provides the user with the more reliable method of surfacing Windows on the taskbar. This evolution in the taskbar has made it pleasurable for the user to use the desktop. The visuals and the animations which have been used are delighters for the user and draws an emotional response.

Sometimes the user need to work on many Windows simultaneously and required to clean the taskbar. Hence by keeping this in view Windows 7 is included with a feature in which only the system icon would appear by default and as per your requirement you can customize the area. This resulted in improved targeting for the mouse.

Have a quick view of the desktop without minimizing all the windows with Aero Peek.

Problem:

Although this tool was present in the earlier editions of Windows, it needed to be enabled.

Solution:

In Windows 7, Aero Peek’s new fade out feature fades out the inactive window on the desktop by highlighting the window you are hovering over. This results in getting the peek preview of the peek window but you can also get the full preview if you look on the monitor.

Without minimizing all the windows you can have the quick view at the desktop. The enhanced Aero Peek is included in the Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions of Windows 7. It is user friendly, as it alleviates the problem faced by the user.

The user who works on modem operating system often complains about the hassle of juggling of too many windows. Aero Peek helps the user by showing the desktop field in the right of the taskbar and displays the outline of the currently open Windows which is the cause of chaos.

It provides you with the power of X-ray vision which allows you to peer past all your open Windows to the desktop. You just have to point to the taskbar which will reveal all your hidden icons and gadgets. By pointing the taskbar thumbnail, you can easily reveal a buried window. To access the feature press Win+Space (the Windows logo key and the space bar) and all of your open windows instantly turn transparent, revealing whatever was on your desktop - wallpaper, icons, and gadgets.

You can also check out for the two new related windows 7 features that are Aero Shake and Snap. With Aero shake you can easily get rid of the previous activities just by giving a vigorous shake to title bar. Aero Snap also helps a user to work with Windows smartly. You can easily maximize windows by pulling it to the top of the screen. You can preview what you are doing with an Aero Peek style which make it easier to bounce away the “sticky” edges.

Problem:

Users often face issues related to accessibility to documents and other programs.

Solution:

windows 7 Jumplist: The toll enables you to go right away to the documents, songs, photos, or websites you turn to every day. In order to open a Jump List, you just need to right click a program icon on the taskbar. For instance, you right click on Internet Explorer and you will get a list of recently opened websites. If you right click on Windows Media Player, you will get a list of the songs that you frequently listen to. This is an efficient way to save time and effort. Moreover, you can pin in the files you want there.

Jump Lists not only provide you with a shortcut to files, they sometimes also provide quick access to useful commands. For instance, you can compose an email directly from there; similarly music keys help you to control volume, change track, etc.

Improved Taskbar: This feature and full-screen previews have made going back and forth of pages, extremely easier. Now, it is lot easier to work on multiple windows at the same time. Windows 7 enables user to pin any of their favorite program to the taskbar. When user hovers over the icon in the taskbar, he will be able to see thumbnails of windows open under that application and when the user hovers over that thumbnail, he will be able to see full-screen preview of that window. The users also have the option to click and drag any icon on to the taskbar.
