Make your job easy with top seven tricks for Windows 7.
Problem:
As Microsoft released the final version of Windows 7, most of us must be wondering – Can we use our favorite tweaks in the newest operating system?
Solution:
Access Defragmentation tool from Right-Click Menu: Do you really want to quickly defragment your drive?, Instead of going through Start menu, programs and etc, use a simple tweak that adds Defrag to the context menu for each hard drive partition.
STEP 1: Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then navigate to the following key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell.
STEP 2: You need to create a new key under shell called “runas”, and then set the (Default) value to “Defragment”. If you want to hide this menu item behind the Shift key right-click menu, then add a new string called Extended with no value.
STEP 3: After this, you’ll need to create a key called “command” and set the default value to the following, which is the command to run defrag with the default options but show verbose output: defrag %1 -v.
Create your own shortcuts to Shut down, Lock and Restart: We can easily shutdown, restart, and lock our PCs from the buttons available in Windows 7, but it seems like users are still looking for shortcuts to perform these tasks. Don’t worry, Windows 7 has a solution. You can create a shortcut key for them. However, you will have to put the shortcut on the Start menu or desktop if you want the shortcut key to work.
STEP 1: At first right-click on the desktop, choose New and then Shortcut.
STEP 2: In the shortcut location box, you’ll need to enter the correct command, which are given below:
Shutdown.exe -s -t 00 , Shutdown.exe -r -t 00 , Rundll32.exe User32.dll, LockWorkStation, rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState, and rundll32.exe powrprof.dll, SetSuspendState 0,1,0.
STEP 3: When you’ve clicked next on the above dialog, you’ll be asked to name the shortcut. Probably best to name it according to the right function.
STEP 4: After you click Finish, you will have a new icon that you can double-click to immediately shutdown, restart, or lock your computer.
Log On Automatically in Windows 7: If you are the only person using your computer at home, then don’t waste your precious time while loging in. There is an option to make sure that Windows doesn’t prompt you for a password when you log on.
STEP 1: Type in netplwiz into the start menu search box, hit enter.
STEP 2: On next screen, uncheck the box that says “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer”, and then hit Apply. You’ll see a username and password box. Enter in the appropriate information here and click OK.
Prevent Windows update from automatically restarting your Windows 7 computer: Normally, Windows asks you to restart your PC whenever it detects any change. However, there are some ways to disable this behavior. You’ll still get the prompt, but it won’t force you to shut down or restart.
STEP 1: Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search box or run dialog, and navigate down to the following key, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
STEP 2: Create a new 32-bit DWORD value named NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers, and give it a value of 1 to prevent automatic reboot while users are logged on. Delete the value to put things back to the way they were.
Add your folder to Windows 7 Taskbar:Most of us like to access folders quickly on desktop. You can add the Computer menu as a folder on the taskbar for the quickest access to your folders.
STEP 1: In order to add a folder to the taskbar, just right-click on the taskbar and choose the Toolbars menu, and then click on New Toolbar.
STEP 2: Locate the folder that you want. Now, you can see your folder right there on the taskbar.
Turn on Remote Desktop on Windows 7 computer: This tool is not available with all editions of Windows 7. By default, you can access it if you have Windows 7 Ultimate, Pro, or Business editions.
STEP 1: You can either right-click the Computer icon and choose properties, or you can type in system into the start menu search box, and then find the entry for System.
STEP 2: Click the Remote Settings link and enable this option.
Project Your Display With Ease:Connecting a projector and projecting your display is really easy with the Windows 7 driver display utility, displayswitch.exe. Simply hit Windows logo key +P to display the easy-to-navigate pop-up window. By hitting your arrow keys (or Windows logo key +P) you can switch through multiple display.
