Windows 7 Group PolicyTaking Advantage of the New Windows 7 Group Policy Features

Windows 7 Group Policy feature provides a centralized infrastructure for the management of all applications running on the operating system as well as the operating system itself. While this feature is best suited for those interested in taking advantage of Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows Server in professional IT environments, there are some home users with unique workflows that may take advantage of Group Policy’s features. There have been many new features and changes made to the Windows 7 Group Policy function that make it even more efficient and robust than ever before.

These are a few of the major changes and new features included in Windows 7 Group Policy:

Windows PowerShell Cmdlets for Group Policy
Additional Group Policy Preferences
Starter Group Policy Objects Improvements

Windows PowerShell Cmdlets for Group Policy
One of the most powerful new changes in the Windows 7 Group Policy is the Windows PowerShell Cmdlets feature. This is a feature that will benefit IT professionals and those with experience in the PowerShell command line providing you with the ability to use the PowerShell command line to manage Group Policy. It will also allow you to run PowerShell scripts during startup and logging in. You can also use this feature for many GPO maintenance tasks such as importing, backup, removal, and creation of GPOs.

Additional Group Policy Preferences
The Windows 7 Group Policy also adds a ton of additional preferences including Power Plan preference items, Internet Explorer 8 preference items, Scheduled Task preference items, and Immediate Task preference items. These different settings will allow you manage the preferences for everything from drive mappings, local users and groups, to registry settings, services, folders, and files. This will ultimately allow you to reduce the number of Group Policy objects required.

Starter Group Policy Objects Improvements
Improvements to Starter Group Policy Objects have been made in the Windows 7 Group Policy for Remote Server Administration Tools. GPOs for the following scenarious have been included, Windows Vista Enterprise Client (EC), Windows XP SP2 SSLF Client, Windows Vista Specialized Security Limited Functionality (SSLF) Client, and Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) EC. Another change that has been made for Windows 7 is the fact that you do not have to download and install the different System Starter GPOs as they are already included within the Remote Server Administration Tools.
