Extend Disk VolumeWindows 7 has two built-in tools, Shrink & Extend, which can be used to manipulate hard drive partitions or volume. However, there are many third-party tools available to resize partitions for a hard disk. I personally prefer default one.

A partition or disk volume is a portion of physical disk that holds data. After creating a partition you must format and assign a drive letter before you can store data on it. A partition can be formatted either with NTFS or FAT. You can view the content of a volume or partition by clicking its icon in Windows Explorer or in My computer. You can create as many as volume with single hard drive.

In computer, a file system is known as a method of storing and managing computer files and the data they contain to make it easy to find and access them. File systems uses a data storage device such as a hard drive, Flash drive, etc.

Follow the given instructions to extend a partition:

STEP 1. Click on Start -> Control Panel.

STEP 2. Next, navigate to System and Security.

STEP 3. The next move in the process is to select Administrative Tools.

STEP 4. Select Computer Management.

STEP 5. Next choose the drive or partition that you wish to extend or resize.

STEP 6. Let’s assume, New Volume (G) has 200 MB available. In order to extend drive (I) to contain the additional space, one must first delete the volume.

STEP 7. The Volume gets deleted and the volume has an unallocated amount of disk space. You can now extend the volume.

STEP 8. Now, select the volume to extend.

STEP 9. The window will show what available space you can use. In this case, it is the 200 MB that was taken from the deleted volume.

STEP 10. Thats all the entire primary volume has additional space.
