Let’s create a bootable Windows 7 USB flash drive for the purpose of installing this latest operating system. Here we are assuming that you own a PC with already Vista installed on it.
Requirements:
- A USB flash drive more than 4GB capacity
- Microsoft Windows 7 installation disk
- A computer running Microsoft Vista
Format the Drive
Follow these steps to use the command prompt to format the disk completely using the diskpart utility:
Warning: This will remove everything on your hard drive.
STEP 1. Insert your USB flash drive.
STEP 2. Open CMD prompt as an administrator. To do this, right click on Start-> All Programs->Accessories-> Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator”.
STEP 3. Locate the drive number of your USB drive by typing the following in the Command Prompt window: diskpart, list disk.
STEP 4. Next, you’ll be presented with USB drives connected to your computer. Choose the one you want to format.
STEP 5. Format the drive by typing the given instructions inside the command prompt window:
• Select disk 1
• Clean
• create partition primary
• select partition 1
• active
• format fs=NTFS
• assign
• exit
Note: Replace the number 1 with the number of your disk above. When you’re done, you’ll have a formatted USB flash drive ready to be made bootable.
Make the Drive Bootable
Now it’s time to use bootsect utility that comes on the Windows 7 disk to make the flash drive bootable. Type the following given command in the same command prompt that you were using above:
STEP 1. Place your Windows 7 installation disk into DVD drive.
STEP2. Change directory to the DVD’s boot directory where bootsect lives:
d:
cd d:\boot
STEP 3. Use bootsect to set the USB as a bootable NTFS drive prepared for Windows 7 image. We’re assuming that your USB flash drive has been labeled disk G:\ by the computer:
bootsect /nt60 g:
STEP 4. You can now quit the command prompt window.
Copy the installation DVD to the USB drive
The best method for creating bootable Windows 7 USB Flash Drive is to use Windows Explorer to copy all the files from your Windows 7 DVD on to the formatted flash drive. Once you’ve copied the files, you are about to complete the process.
