Windows 7 has created hustle and bustle and it has truly become the talk of the town. Windows 7 flags many new features that are smooth and highly finished. Many enhanced features have been introduced such as new graphical features, enhanced taskbar and security that makes it safer and user friendly. Microsoft made available beta and one release candidate for public testing process for Windows 7 which is the largest shareware trial period offered by any and it does not prove to be irritating as Vista was.

It is expected that 86% of the users are going to upgrade to windows 7. And we are here to give you little guidance on that:

Before you Upgrade, What You Can Upgrade To

Before you upgrade, it is necessary to keep in mind from which Windows version you are upgrading. If you are running Windows XP, you will have to do “custom” installation which will delete your data. And, if you are running Windows Vista, it is possible to upgrade from Windows Vista to an equivalent edition.

Before upgrading, make sure that your system meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 7: 32-bit are 1GHz 32-bit processor, 1GB of RAM, DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM driver model 1.0 (For Aero), 16 GB of available disk space and DVD drive whereas Windows 7 64-bit requires 1GHz 64-bit processor, 2 GB of RAM, DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM driver model 1.0 (For Aero), 20 GB of available disk space and DVD drive. Microsoft is also offering free Upgrade Advisor download for Windows system that will help you by telling that whether your hardware is compatible with Windows 7 or not.

Before You upgrade

It is a better option to have a copy of your music, pictures, data and other important files for complete security. Therefore, backup your data before upgrade.

Option 1: Upgrade from Vista

It is one of the best options as all your data and computer settings will remain in place.

Try the following steps:

STEP 1: Insert Windows 7 DVD. Click Install Now option. USB stick can also be used to install or upgrade to windows 7.

STEP 2: Once you have run the setup, the two options will be displayed:
* Check compatibibility online
* Install Now

If you have already check the compatibility of your system, Click Install Now

STEP 3: In the next screen, you will see two options:
* Go online to get the latest update for installation
* Do not get the latest updates for installation

If you have the latest version of Windows 7, then need not check for updates.

STEP 4: Accept the license agreement (I accept the license agreement) and click Next to continue the procedure.

STEP 5: In the next screen again you will see two options:
* Upgrade
* Custom

Select upgrade option from Windows Vista to Windows 7.

STEP 6: Windows will check for the compatibility and report will be generated by it. If there is no issue regarding compatibility, Windows 7 set up will proceed further.

Option 2: Upgrading from XP or Clean Hard Drive

There is no actual upgrade from XP to Windows 7. You need to ceate a new partition for your data or need to back up the applications. User State Migration Tool is offered by Microsoft that claims to capture desktop and system settings, the files you want to be in your latest Windows 7. You can also use Windows 7’s Easy Transfer Tool with a USB drive that will help you to migrate files and settings from one windows to another.

Try the following steps to copy files using Windows Easy Transfer on XP computer.

STEP 1: Insert the Windows 7 DVD while running Windows XP.

STEP 2: Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Start menu, and then clicking Explore.

STEP 3: Browse to the DVD drive on your computer and click migsetup.exein the Support\Migwiz directory. The Windows Easy Transfer window opens.

STEP 4: Click Next.

STEP 5: Select An external hard disk or USB flash drive.

STEP 6: Click This is my old computer. Windows Easy Transfer scans the computer.

STEP 7: Click Next. You can also determine which files should be migrated by selecting only the user profiles you want to transfer, or by clicking Customize.

STEP 8: Enter a password to protect your Easy Transfer file, or leave the box blank, and then click Save.

STEP 9: Browse to the external location on the network or to the removable media where you want to save your Easy Transfer file, and then click Save.

STEP 10: Click Next. Windows Easy Transfer displays the file name and location of the Easy Transfer file you just created.

Transfer files and settings on Windows 7 computer

STEP 1: If you saved your files and settings in an Easy Transfer file on a removable media such as a USB flash drive or external hard drive rather than on a network share, insert the removable media into the computer.

STEP 2: Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Windows Easy Transfer.

STEP 3: Click Next.

STEP 4: Click An external hard disk or USB flash drive.

STEP 5: Click This is my new computer.

STEP 6: Click Yes, open the file.

STEP 7: Browse to the location where the Easy Transfer file was saved. Click the file name, and then click Open.

STEP 8: Click Transfer to transfer all files and settings. You can also determine which files should be migrated by selecting only the user profiles you want to transfer, or by clicking Customize.

STEP 9: Click Close after Windows Easy Transfer has completed moving your files.

Option 3 : Dual Boot windows XP or Vista with Windows 7

If you want to remove Windows XP but also want to install Windows 7 then lets have a look to dual boot your system:

STEP 1: Download Windows 7 and burn it to a DVD.

STEP 2: Partition your Hard Drive.

NOTE: To create a partition in your hard drive vary depending whether your system is installed with XP or Vista.

If you want to dual boot your system, you can use the User State Migration Tool or Windows 7’s Easy Transfer Tool. During large deployments, this tool allows the user to migrate the files and settings of Windows XP or Windows Vista operating system to a new Windows installation.

Option 4: Load Windows 7 on a Netbook

Try the following steps to install Windows 7 on a netbook using external hard drive:

STEP 1: Plug the external hard drive to your desktop computer.

STEP 2: Copy windows 7 ISO on it.

STEP 3: If your PC runs on Windows XP, you require to enter to Disk Management.

STEP 4: Find the external hard drive in the list.

STEP 5: Choose mark Partition as Active.

STEP 6: After copying Windows 7, you just need to plug the external hard disk to your netbook.
