Microsoft recommends you to install Windows 7 on a separate hard drive partition. In this article we’ll discuss how to create a separate partition with XP and Vista, and off course the Windows 7 installation process.

Follow these  instructions to create a separate partition with XP/Vista:

STEP 1. Click on Start. Go to the Run Command section.

STEP 2. Type diskmgmt.msc on the search bar. Windows will open Disk Management wizard.

STEP 3. For creating a new partition, right-click unallocated space on the basic disk where you want to create the partition, and then click New Partition.

STEP 4. Determine the type of partition that you want to create (either Primary partition, Extended partition, or Logical drive), and then click Next.

STEP 5. Choose the size of the partition in the Partition size in MB box, and then click Next.

STEP 6. Decide whether to manually assign a drive letter, let the system automatically enumerate the drive, or do not assign a drive letter to the new partition or logical drive, and then click Next.

STEP 7. At last you need to format the partition if you want to use it for Windows 7 installation.

In order to make sure a successful installation do the following:

Make sure your system’s components meet the minimum Windows 7 requirements. Your computer hardware needs to meet the following minimum hardware requirements to be Windows7 PC Capability Ready: 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor. 1 GB of system memory. 16 GB available hard disk space. DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or later. DVD drive.

Make sure your hardware and software are compatible using the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. free program from Microsoft will perform an inspection of your computer and let you know if anything might cause you problems. After running the Advisor, you’ll see a report screen.

Make sure you have the required product key information. You can find product key on the back of Windows 7 DVD packaging. Its a 25 alphanumeric key, such as KFEPC-12345-MHORY-12345-IROFE, that you need to enter during the Windows 7 wizard installation to complete the process. Keep the product key in a safe place, and do not share it with others.

Back up your files in case you need to restore your current operating system. Determine whether you want to perform an in-place upgrade or install a new copy of Windows 7.

Step By Step Windows 7 Installation:

STEP 1.Insert the Windows 7 DVD into your DVD drive, and then start your computer.

STEP 2. Click Install now.

STEP 3. Click an option whether to get important updates for installation.

STEP 4. Select the edition you want to install, and then click Next to continue.

STEP 5. Click the I accept the license terms check box, and then click Next to continue.

STEP 6. Click the type of installation you want: Upgrade or Custom.

STEP 7. Wait while Setup copies and installs Windows 7 on your computer. Your computer might reboot several times during this process.

STEP 8. Next, you need to enter few details such as, Country, time, and keyboard, User accounts, Product key activation, Time zone, date, and time and etc.

STEP 9. Wait while Setup configures Windows 7 prepares your desktop.
