Microsoft’s newest operating system, Windows 7, offers an enhanced BitLocker system that comes with a few changes like BitLocker To Go, which provides password protection to your important data. It has been extended to the external storage devices like the USB flash devices, where restriction has been enabled with the requirement of a password or the PIN number of your smart card.
The new Windows 7 follows the same security band as Windows Vista but with additional enhancements in the hard drive encryption scheme known as BitLocker. It gives access to the users to encrypt their external disk drives like the portable USB flash drive.
Let us discuss the procedure of activating BitLocker To Go Drive Encryption scheme on any of the USB flash drive. Right click on the USB flash drive which will be shown in the My Computer window, and then select the command to Turn on BitLocker from the menu.
When you are through with the above process, the next task will be to set up a password that will be asked by the setup process. This password can also be used for unlocking the drive. You will have an option to enter the PIN of your smart card. You can use a simple password for encrypting the data, and a smart card can also be used for the decryption of the USB flash drive or any external storage medium.
After setting up the password or opting for the smart card as the password, you will be prompted by the BitLocker To Go to store a recovery key to unlock the drive. This is for the situation when you forget your password, or your smart card is lost.
After the recovery key is stored, it will then prompt you for starting the encryption process. As soon as you press on the Start Encryption, it will begin encrypting the device. The total time the process consumes will depend on the size of the drive being used along with the processing power of your computer.
How to use windows 7 Bitlocker

STEP 2 : Select, Turn on BitLocker command and the removable drive will be encrypted. When the removable storage device has been encrypted, a lock icon will appear on the drive whenever the drive is plugged in to a Windows 7 PC.
