Microsoft offers a new tool called Parental Controls in its latest operating system, Windows 7, which enables parents to help manage how their children use their computers. You can use this feature to set restrictions on the applications you think are not suitable for your child.

The tool even allows you to set different restrictions for each child on the same computer. The feature enables you to specify which websites your children can visit, and you can also view activity logs.

Here are the basic requirements for this tool:

You need at least two user accounts on your system, for instance, an administrator account for yourself and a standard account for the child. You can create a separate account for each person. Make sure that each child to whom you want to restrict has a standard account because parental controls can’t be apply to an administrator accounts.

Use a complex password for all administrator accounts on the computer because without password protection anyone can access your system and turn off Parental Controls.

You can’t use this tool while working in a domain environment. On domain joined computers, the Parental Controls Feature is disabled, even when you’re connected to your home network.

In order to configure Parental Controls follow the given guideline:

STEP 1: Click on Parental Controls in Control Panel.

STEP 2: To set restrictions for a child, click the child’s account name and then click on Enforce Current Settings.

STEP 3: Click Time Limits in the User Controls window to control the times at which your child can use the computer. You can then specify for each day of the week, which hours are allowed, and which are blocked.

After that, if your child tries to log on outside of the allowable times, a simple message appears: “Your account has time restrictions that prevent you from logging on at this time. Please try again later.”

If your child is still logged on when the blocked time arrives, he or she will be forcibly logged off.
