Microsoft is well aware about increasingly profitable market of the smart laptop industry. So, there is no doubt that the big M is working hard to change people’s minds and attract them back from Linux. Windows 7 Lite version may shortly hit the market. There was a lot of confusion whether Microsoft will create a separate version of Windows 7 for light-weight ULPC laptops or netbooks. A confirmation has been made by CNET about the news.
The Eee PC running a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM handles the new Windows 7 pretty well, just as it ran Vista. We still had a problem getting a few of the Eee PC drivers to work with the system, but for the most part we were able to get all of the features to work using the XP drivers provided by ASUS. It takes just 58 seconds to boot Windows 7. Of course, it has actually taken a minute for some systems to boot XP. However, the Eee PC 1000H boots in only 40 seconds with its default operating system.
With Windows 7, network problem has also been resolved with improved Network Manager. The users faced issue in connecting to a wireless network in the earlier versions of the Windows OS. Things are easier in Windows 7. Presence of jumplist has simplified selecting the network icon in the System Tray to check for network availability. Induction of HomeGroup has helped a lot in sharing media and video files both at home and at business.
According to a Microsoft’s employee, Windows 7 Lite version will run on 1GB of memory and 16GB of (solid-state drive) storage. Higher-end Netbooks will have a 160GB hard disk drive, as per Microsoft “guidance.” Apart from the wireless connection manager, things are pretty smooth as far as performance is concerned. Microsoft will be running some benchmarks later with Windows 7 Lite. But the experience with Eee PC 1000H is very calm for user. It makes chatting on Skype, writing a post in Wordpress, editing pictures in GIMP, and uploading video files using Filezilla very easy.
Graphic performance has also become smooth for video playback on Hulu.com. But if downloaded to 720p high-definition, video is played back with a number of pauses. Additionally, video call over Skype had a problem sending and receiving video at the same time. Doing one or the other was fine, but not both at the same time. Hope Windows 7 Lite will come over these problems.
